Mad Men has captured the imaginations of millions of viewers, winning fifteen golden globes and four Emmys. Perhaps more than the gorgeously stylized visuals and impeccably re-created history, it's the show's richly drawn characters stumbling through their personal and professional lives that get under our skin and keep us invested. In Mad Men on the Couch, Dr. Stephanie Newman analyzes the show's primary characters through the lens of modern psychology. Lending her trained professional eye, she poses and expertly answers pressing questions such as: Why does Don constantly sabotage himself? Why is Betty such a cold mother and desperately unhappy housewife? (Hint: It's not just because her "people are Nordic.") Why does Pete prevail in adversity when Roger crumbles? Why is Peggy able to rise profesionally in the male jungle of Madison Avenue when Joan can't? Can these characters ever really change? With critical commentary that is both entertaining and insightful, Mad Men on the Couch will provide viewers with a unique persepctive on the show.

Essay from the year 2014 in the subject American Studies - Miscellaneous, grade: 1,7, Humboldt-University of Berlin (Department of English and American Studies), course: American TV Serials: The Wire, Mad Men, Homeland, language: English, abstract: In the following research paper I will focus on the American TV serial “Mad Men” (AMC, 2007-now). In the course of our class we discussed several aspects of the award-winning show and I was most fascinated by the sexual politics and the dynamics of the female-male relationships of the characters. Therefore, the focus of my work will be on the gender relations within “Mad Men” and more precisely on the character of Betty Draper. It is my aim to analyze the character of Betty within the patriarchal structures she finds herself in (chapter 3) and this analysis will be the main part of this paper. Prior to Betty’s analysis, chapter 2 serves to clarify the concepts of Second-Wave Feminism and Patriarchy since they provide the historical background and theoretical framework. The last part of the paper will be the conclusion, followed by a list of the cited works. I hope that this term paper contributes to answering the question of how the character of Betty Draper is influenced by the patriarchal structures and gender roles of the 1960s. Finally, it is to be said that I will exclusively focus on Season 1 of “Mad Men” and that given the 6-7 page maximum a more in-depth analysis would be possible.

This worthy successor to Juliet Mitchell's pathbreaking Psychoanalysis and Feminism is both a defense of the long-dismissed diagnosis of hysteria as a centerpiece of the human condition and a plea for a new understanding of the influence of sibling and peer relationships. In Mad Men and Medusas Mitchell traces the history of hysteria, arguing that we need to reclaim hysteria to understand how distress and trauma express themselves in different societies and different times. Mitchell convincingly demonstrates that although hysteria may have disappeared as a disease, it is still a critical factor in understanding psychological development through the life cycle.

From mid-twentieth-century films such as Grand Hotel, Waterloo Bridge, and The Red Shoes to recent box-office hits including Billy Elliot, Save the Last Dance, and The Company, ballet has found its way, time and again, onto the silver screen and into the hearts of many otherwise unlikely audiences. In Dying Swans and Madmen, Adrienne L. McLean explores the curious pairing of classical and contemporary, art and entertainment, high culture and popular culture to reveal the ambivalent place that this art form occupies in American life. Drawing on examples that range from musicals to tragic melodramas, she shows how commercial films have produced an image of ballet and its artists that is associated both with joy, fulfillment, fame, and power and with sexual and mental perversity, melancholy, and death. Although ballet is still received by many with a lack of interest or outright suspicion, McLean argues that these attitudes as well as ballet's popularity and its acceptability as a way of life and a profession have often depended on what audiences first learned about it from the movies.

AMC's Mad Men (2007-2015) was an instant hit, winning fifteen Golden Globes and four Emmys and "redefining television." Already a slew of books have appeared to examine its cultural impact. Now comes The End of an Era: Mad Men and the Ordeal of Civility, bringing to the discussion a unique perspective: race realist and Traditionalist. Drawing in equal measure from Kevin MacDonald and Rene Guenon, and able to marshal a stunning array of pop culture reference points, James J. O'Meara -- himself a child of the '60s and a product of America's long-dead industrial heartland -- examines the hidden agendas and social implications of the Mad Men phenomenon. At its center is a bravura, two-part essay analyzing the disintegration of the Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce agency as symbolic reenactment of the archetypal struggle of the Aryan and the Judaic for control of Western civilization. From the culture-creating powers of the three-button suit, to the dissolution of the Aryan Ego in the hot tubs of Esalen, The End of An Era delivers one stunning insight after another. You'll never watch a rerun of Mad Men the same way you did the first time. "James O'Meara is a cultural alchemist scrying the flickering images of TV series and old films for signs of perennial wisdom lying dormant at the heart of postmodernity. In End of an Era he focuses on the TV show Mad Men and reveals Traditional archetypes at war with Judaic crypsis for the soul of the series."-Christopher Pankhurst, author of Numinous Machines "This short collection of essays is an invigorating romp through contemporary American culture, such as it is. James J. O'Meara's concept of 'Judaic inversion' unlocks the mystery of why so much Hollywood and television fare is what it is: the recurring Jewish desire to exact revenge on a WASP society that (allegedly) excluded Jews. John Murray Cuddihy (The Ordeal of Civility) would surely approve of O'Meara's readings of the hit TV series Mad Men. As O'Meara writes, 'Don Draper is really Dick Whitman (= white man), guilty of desertion and manslaughter, both capital crimes. After all, we all know every successful WASP is a big old phony, right?' Understanding this spirited book will help you understand the mentality of the hostile elite that has been corrupting our culture for generations. And understanding is a critical step in trying to take back our own culture."-Edmund Connelly "James J. O'Meara brings his 'paranoiac-critical method' to bear upon the singular TV drama Mad Men, and the reader emerges with fresh insight on this iconically ironic pop-culture phenomenon."-Andy Nowicki, author of Lost Violent Souls "James J. O'Meara's ingenious and mutually illuminating juxtapositions of popular culture and arcane theory (in this case Mad Men and Traditionalist wisdom) bring to mind a thinker with a very different worldview, namely Slavoj i ek, author of such books as Enjoy Your Symptom!: Jacques Lacan in Hollywood and Out. James J. O'Meara is the Slavoj i ek of the Alternative Right."-Greg Johnson, author of New Right vs. Old Right"

When law enforcement struggles to solve a serial murder, arson, rape, or child abduction, and is making little headway, it turns to the FBI’s legendary Behavioral Science Unit (BSU) at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia. Over the past three decades, more than thirty members of this elite team have worked to capture countless elusive criminals. Rarely have they been appreciated. Never has their story been told. Now, at the suggestion of Stephen Band, the current Chief of the BSU, the inside story has been written by John Campbell, former BSU Chief (1989-1992) and Don DeNevi, author of many highly acclaimed true-crime books. In a fascinating account, full of quiet heroics and grisly criminal details, the authors describe the difficult work of the tireless professionals who have devoted their careers to investigating and analyzing the deeds and personalities of the macabre psychopaths who haunt our streets. In contrast to well-known fictional depictions, like The Silence of the Lambs and The X-Files, DeNevi and Campbell’s real-life perspective shows that the true story is more engrossing, indeed astonishing, than any movie or novel. The authors reveal how this crack unit developed a new technique, from a combination of psychological profiling and old-fashioned detective work, which succeeded in cracking a host of difficult cases, including serial murders, hostage taking, and terrorism. Readers experience what it is like to crawl into the twisted minds of notorious criminals, as psychological profilers must do to learn their motivations, patterns, and probable next move. This unique oral history will provide fascinating reading for fans of C.S.I., Profiler, and other similar dramas, and is also a long overdue and fitting tribute to the heroic men and women of the Behavioral Science Unit, who fight everyday to keep Americans safe.

Is there some adventure out there that we are not having, some vividness, some wild pleasure, that we are not experiencing in our responsible, productive days? ... We are bequeathed on earth one very short life, and it might be good, one of these days, to make sure that we are living it.' As steely eyed in examining her own life as she is in skewering our cultural pitfalls, Roiphe gives us autobiographical pieces that are by turns, deeply moving, self-critical, razor-sharp, entertaining and unapologetic in their defence of 'messy lives'. In Praise of Messy Lives is powerfully unified, vital work from one of our most astute and essayists writing today.

Over the past two decades, new technologies, changing viewer practices, and the proliferation of genres and channels has transformed American television. One of the most notable impacts of these shifts is the emergence of highly complex and elaborate forms of serial narrative, resulting in a robust period of formal experimentation and risky programming rarely seen in a medium that is typically viewed as formulaic and convention bound. Complex TV offers a sustained analysis of the poetics of television narrative, focusing on how storytelling has changed in recent years and how viewers make sense of these innovations. Through close analyses of key programs, including The Wire, Lost, Breaking Bad, The Sopranos, Veronica Mars, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and Mad Men the book traces the emergence of this narrative mode, focusing on issues such as viewer comprehension, transmedia storytelling, serial authorship, character change, and cultural evaluation. Developing a television-specific set of narrative theories, Complex TV argues that television is the most vital and important storytelling medium of our time.
